Healthy Travels!

December 23, 2010

Are you traveling by air over the holidays?  Even the best travel plans can include unwanted side effects such as jet lag.  You can help prevent and lessen the effects with these simple steps:

  •
  • ********
  •
  • ********************************************************************

  • Drink plenty of water…. keep yourself well hydrated throughout the flight.

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol…. and limit your sugary drink intake – these beverages can send your blood sugar on a rollercoaster ride.

  • Food is harder to digest at high altitudes…. so eat lightly during the flight and avoid the high-salt, high-fat entrees the airlines and airports tend to serve.

  • Get up and stretch…. now and then to stimulate your circulation and dress comfortably.

  • When you arrive…. expose yourself to as much natural daylight as you can.  Light is the most powerful influence on the timing of your body’s internal clock.

  • Consider melatonin…. you can take 2.5 mg of melatonin sublingually at bedtime for one or two nights to significantly reduce jet lag, regardless of the direction of travel.

Toss and Turn No More….

December 20, 2010

Two reasons why you might toss and turn at night

  • Light

  • Temperature

Don’t be afraid of the dark!

Having too much light in your bedroom at night can interfere with your body’s production of melatonin, which we all know we need enough of to get a good night’s rest.

Here are a few suggestions to keep it dark enough in your bedroom to sleep tight.

********************************************************

  • If you must have your cell phone in your bedroom, keep it as far away from your bed as possible and turn it face down
  • Turn your TV off
  • Turn your computer off
  • NO night light…anywhere
  • Use room darkening shades
  • If you get up to tinkle, turn the light off as soon as you’re done.

Keep it Cool!

Besides keeping your bedroom pitch black, to help you fall asleep and stay asleep, you should keep your room cool.  Many people keep their bedrooms way too warm.

  • *****************************************************

  • Studies show that the optimal bedroom temperature should be between  62 to 68 degrees.
  • Keeping your room cooler than 60 degrees F. or hotter than 70 degrees F. can lead to restless sleep.
  • When you sleep, your body’s  temperature drops to its lowest level.   Therefore a cooler bedroom is most conducive to sleep, since it mimics your body’s natural temperature.

Sleep Tight!

White Out Your Baby

December 15, 2010

My kid will eat anything. At the tender of age of 12, she’s gaga for garlic, crazy ’bout curries, unchallenged by ripe cheeses, and even psyched for sushi. Why? Because Mom and I have perennially refused to dumb down her dinner plate. From day one, she’s largely eaten what we’ve eaten and the result is a child with a startlingly healthy diet who generally prefers the good stuff over the sugar, fat, and empty calories that fill too many grocery carts.

Without knowing it, we were following Dr. Alan Greene’s theory of food imprinting, which says that the foods babies are exposed to in the womb and fed during early childhood actually program kids to prefer them over other choices. Feed your child sugar and worthless carbs and that what’s they’ll grow up to instinctually seek. Feed them broccoli and Brussels sprouts and they’ll become an adult who heads for the salad bar instead.

That’s the theory at the heart of Dr. Greene’s new White Out campaign. At issue is the white rice cereal that many children get as their first solid food. Dr. Greene posits that, it’s a bad choice, and is calling for change. He’s asking every mom and dad to make a simple switch to whole-grain brown rice cereal instead. The goal is to end white rice cereal’s reign of error by next Thanksgiving, and we can help by joining the the cause and spreading the word.

Making the switch is an easy thing to try. Help set future generations on a delicious path to better health.

No more white!
